Youth Empowerment through

self-Advocacy

For therapy, mental health, and social service professionals, working with children and adolescents brings unique challenges including disruptive and defiant behaviors, complex family dynamics, schools systems, and the foster care systems, to name a few. But, working with children and adolescents also brings an amazing opportunity to create an alliance with those young people that can dramatically impact their trajectory for the better. What is more empowering than being able to advocate for yourself? But being able to advocate for yourself is an acquired skill, or skills rather, and partnering with our young people who are living with mental illness and/or within the child welfare system to cultivate those skills has benefits that extend far beyond the individual.

Attendees will:

  • Identify the ways in which youth clients' voice are diminished during treatment/service provision.

  • Learn specific interventions for developing self-advocacy skills

  • Recognize the positive impact self-advocacy has on life trajectory

  • Discuss ethical guidelines regarding boundaries

  • Analyze transition and termination practices
