What are your thoughts about white exceptionalism, guilt, and shame? Have you felt that way? Have you been driven by toxic white guilt?
After learning about white exceptionalism, guilt, and shame and watching the video, I believe I have directly experienced white guilt and shame but definitely not toxic white guilt. In the video, one of the participants mentions that white guilt leads to inaction and ‘looking like bystanders.’ This resonated with me and I can see that I, too, have been complacent and done nothing active, including looking within myself and at my biases. I believe that the discomfort prevents many of us from doing more, saying more and acting more; it certainly has for me. No one likes to be uncomfortable so many white people say, ‘I’m not racist’ and assume that’s enough. I don’t think it is enough.
