I loved watching the video where Tom Rietz discussed his interaction with someone who held very different values. I was left, however, with a small twinge of discomfort. I'm wondering when and if the sharing of our own stories in order to educate others becomes about how we are more woke than them, or even speaking for black people. Does any of this make sense? I don't want to assume that I know something based on my experiences that could actually become retroactive.
i think what you said makes sense. My feeble understanding is sharing our stories is problematic/toxic when it speaks over or for a person of color. I think sharing our stories of we starting unlearning racism with other white people can be really powerful because it communicates humility in the ‘i didn’t always know this/think this’ spirit and helps it not appear as if we’re chastising or patronizing people.
