My awareness is quite new. A recent graduate in psychology, I've taken an introductory course on social justice which covered racism. Initially, this class was meaningful in understanding how race has affected my own identity as a Taiwanese American. I thought I was an ally to other minorities, but in embracing my own racial identity, I see how I am only aware, not doing anything to be consciously active. What active means can be complicated (I may be a "white savior" - even though I'm not white), so for now, I will continue to inform and educate myself, committed to experiencing discomfort and practicing anti-racist actions in my life. I still have questions as to what that means to be an anti-racist, what are the steps that I can take in my life?
I can relate to you as well. Embracing our racial identity is the first step. I think the steps to be an anti-racist is speaking out and educating yourself more every day.
