Where do you think you are on the ally continuum? If you are a person of color, you can still become an anti-racist ally to other racially marginalized groups. Do you think you already demonstrate allyship? Share with the other participants the ways in which you are already an ally, and ways that you would like to become a stronger one.
I believe I am in the Aware position on the ally continuum. I have a general idea about racism and know basic history however, I’ve come to learn that the history I was taught has been whitewashed and manipulated. I don’t know where to go to locate accurate information with which to educate myself. I know I’m not active on behalf of myself or others which is why I’ve taken this training. I know I need to begin someplace and I cannot become an anti-racist ally without first knowing more about myself and my own biases. I’m not ready to demonstrate allyship because I know that I need more education and reflection. I know I’m not a white savior and I do not want to exhibit toxic white guilt either. My goal is to continue my self-education on racism which will move me forward along the continuum into the Active position. From there, I would like to ultimately become a true Advocate for People of Color.
I too, feel that I am in the Aware position on the ally continuum. My goal is the continue my education and awareness long after this workshop, and encourage my teenage and 20+ children to take my steps even further. I support them in their desire to join protests and walks for equal rights, and have healthy discussions with them. I want to change my mindset.
