I have always shied away from speaking up and did more work in safer communities where I wasn't pushing against the powers that be. I now see how that is me colluding with oppression and how the system of racism keeps itself going. I like the idea of finding my story to share and then listening to another person's story to breakdown a situation that is racist or has racist undertones. I am not good at holding facts, dates and history in my head so it has also stopped me from being able to defend myself and my ideas. I can be easily "out talked". However, thinking about these confrontations from the point of view of listening and sharing is a strength I have. It gives me courage.
