I grew up in a large family supported by a divorced mom in the 1970s when divorce wasn't as common as today. It didn't occur to me that I was privileged because I felt poor compared to my friends. I now see that despite our relative poverty, there were still many elements of white privilege that I benefitted from - good schools, lack of violence/unrest in the community, societal support such as high property values, among others. I benefitted more than I realized at the time.
