I've been reflecting on the ways in which I show up as an ally and the areas where I need to do more in my life. I don't feel my place on the ally continuum is fixed-- rather, I move mostly between aware and advocate but sometimes, I'm apathetic too. Sometimes, I get stuck in a fixed mindset and don't believe our country, or I, am capable of growth in this area. Other times, I feel like if we all forge ahead together, we can actually set an example across the world. I used to feel that we were all tangled in a web of racism, with some benefitting and many suffering, but all of us trapped in it. I now understand that there are possibilities beyond the web but that it's actually going to take white people working to make it happen, which means striving towards allyship.
