White guilt - no; white shame - absolutely. The reason why I don't feel white guilt is that my ancestors arrived in the early 1900's. They'd been peasants working the land for a pittance. My great-grandparents emigrated to the US because they were the oldest and their families were starving. They met in Ohio, married, started a family, and never went back to their country. I grew up surrounded by racism - separate but equal was still the law of the land when I started school. My grandparents, aunts, and uncles all dropped the n word frequently (or they said "those people" or "the coloreds"). Sadly, my cousins seem to be following in their footsteps. I feel like I still have a long way to go but starting the hard conversations is a step in the right direction.
