I think I am active but want to move towards advocate. Although I do call out people when I hear racist slurs, have always been the member of the English department speaking out to decolonise our bookshelf and diversify in our curriculum, there is still more that I can do on a system level I think.
Working in international schools is a unique context, and there are many that assume we are non racist just because we are diverse in our demographic. But this is far from the truth. As an advocate of global learning and service learning coordinator, I am constantly seeking to promote different ways of knowing and seeing, encouraging reciprocity and exchange, reflection and dialogue... and promoting intercultural learning without othering, but I think now my toolbox is expanding and I can improve conversations I have about the elephant in the room- power. And this is often linked to whiteness in may contexts we operate in.
