When I think of white exceptionalism I think of the phrase "I don't see color." The phrase fits this because you are trying to say something you think is right and nice, but really is very inaccurate and offensive. We should be embracing different cultures. When learning about white exceptionalism, I definitely fell into this category in points of my life. I felt like I was doing the right things but in reality I was not helping improve the lives of people of different races and cultures.
I think white shame and guilt are very prevalent in our society, and I think it will only get worse. I was reading a thread on twitter about a high up healthcare official basically apologizing for spreading lies about our healthcare system. It was obvious he wanted to help. So many of the replies were basically telling him that it was too late to apologize. My hope is that as more and more white people because aware of their privilege and start to speak out, that there isn't this type of backlash. To me it is so counter productive.
