Such as white is the absence of color, white privilege seems lack an absence of labor, responsibility, grit, perseverance, as privileges are bountiful for those white beings. I cannot hide by brown skin. But I have felt relief in knowing that my son has lighter skin and can 'pass' as white. This allows him some privileges. I understand that and am fully aware. Whereas, I still feel, after 22 years working in schools, that I have to prove myself. I always feel that I have to do more, work longer, educate and inform others on social justice issues, as if it were my duty. I always feel that my actions are a representation of all Latinos. That we carry that weight and burden so as to not hinder the younger generation. Although I can listen to the perspectives of white people, I cannot relate. Although it seems easier, it does not appeal to me to just be given privilege.
