Growing up in the northeastern part of the United States, I would like to think we had more awareness, welcoming and less bias but not always. I remember hearing people talk about how values would go down if more black people moved into the neighborhood - redlining. As a child, I was confused why that should change anything and was excited for a more diverse neighborhood. I think of the amount of social media posts, still today, angry at the protests but forgetting that nothing happened when they were peaceful. I work in education, it is our job to ensure that our students are empowered and the systematic oppression STOPS.
