Was anyone else out there surprised by your results? I was all over the board. One test told me I slightly favored blacks over whites. The next one told me I slightly favored light skin tones to darker skin tones. One told me I did not favor Native Americans over White Americans. One told me I slightly favored European Americans over Asian Americans. I'm not sure what I feel right now. Just wondered how everyone else fared.
Kathryn, I can imagine that the test might vary depending on your comfort with the test itself. I felt better equipped after taking a couple. I did feel like the tests were pretty spot on for me and my known biases. I'm hoping to find a way to work on those biases to level the field of my mind.
Thank you, Parrish. That makes me feel better. Hope you enjoy the rest of the course.
I had no preference on 2 of my tests and then all of a sudden during the grueling 20th time it felt like I was in part 7 I messed up one because they SWITCH them and I only had that one mess up and I was "sTRONGLY" preferenced toward white skin ???
So needless to say I disagree.
I had slight preferences for the minority populations. I definitely think that by part 7 on the tests and taking them back to back, it affected my scores. I do find it helpful in learning what areas I need to address biases.
I've participated in many programs regarding diversity and inclusion, bias and microaggressions. I have what I consider to be a pretty good sense of self and knowledge of my implicit biases. Going against and training oneself in response to what is our natural or engrained thoughts and urges take time and practice. I work constantly on being open and welcoming to everyone I meet. I want people to feel comfortable around me and want to ensure they know they are safe with me if they need to talk. I work in a university office that deals with students in crisis, so it is important that I promote honest and genuine safety, trust, confidentiality, and a willingness to listen, respond, and aid in the best interest of our students. These types of programs that we are all participating in right now are so important in our learning and growth.
