I believe desegregated schools and communities are very important. Racism is learned and if children grow up with many other races, I feel like it makes it so much harder to learn to hate. I group up in Miami and went to school with a lot of cuban and black children. In high school, I was in drama which would have rehearsals until around 10 PM. Even though my school was only a mile away, my father refused to come pick me up. I was scared to walk home alone, it was a very busy road and guys would yell disgusting things at me as they drove by. One evening after rehearsal my friend agreed to drive me home but he said that I had to be last because the other kids getting rides were giving him gas money. He happened to be a black boy. When I finally got dropped off at home, in the back seat with two black boys, my father went into a rage, he screamed at me to get into the house and chased my friend away. That's when I knew he was racist. He would never have acted like that if they were white. I called him out on it years later but he denied any memory of the event and always denied he was a racist.
