This is a complex subject for me because I've been doing research on it because my maternal grandmother was an orphan and we knew very little about her family. I found out through DNA testing that my mom and I are about 60% indigenous to the Americas. That's not a big surprise because most of my life people have been telling me I look indigenous. A Mexican poet once told me I looked like a "pretty Indian", a microagression to be sure. However, I feel I can't identify as Indigenous because I didn't grow up in my culture and have been cut off. This cutting off happened generations ago and so how to return?
