I agree that white is seen as the default and recognize that we have privilege that is not earned in any way. Being white in America is a much easier path and comes with automatic freedoms that are easily taken for granted. Privileges equals power.
When I have been in other countries I have experienced what it was like to be on the other end of the equation. Unspoken looks and interactions spoke volumes. I did not always feel safe. Here I presume the ability to move freely and do business as “normal”. I can find underwear in a “nude” color that matches MY “nude” color. I see people in places of power who look like me and see role models of success.
I must admit that I have “culture envy”. I see black culture, Native culture, just about any culture other than white and the closeness of their families and community and wish that I, too, had customs, rituals, and identity.
