I had never heard of the bamboo ceiling but in reflecting on my employment experiences, that is accurate. I thought that it was interesting and well put to say the 1 drop of black makes you black for the purpose of oppression but 1 drop of anything else makes you less native then what someone might be perceived or treated as. This is something that I know about but certainly need to consider on a deeper level. I also liked that it was pointed out that you can identify as part of an ethnic group but also as a part of a common experience, for example, being Thai and also identifying as a gangly suburban kid. I'm sure that the societal preference for light skin has benefited me. No one crosses the street when I am walking alone, folks make small talk, and I am nearly always greeted in stores. I also know that in certain parts of the city I live in, it is expected that I am black. I know that I have never asked someone where they are from because that was unimportant. I wanted to get to know the person. These videos helped affirm some expirerencs that I have had when out with my friends who identify as a person of color.
