What are your thoughts about the concept of white culture, identity, and entitlement as they were discussed? What are your thoughts about the concept of white privilege?
Right now, I think the thing that hit me the most was how white privilege is being able to walk away from the conversation and not have it follow you. In the last month, I realized how badly I just wanted to stop thinking about racial issues and turn off the news. I was confronted with the fact that this is not a unique desire, but the fact that I actually COULD ignore it and go on about my day and pretend things are fine is white privilege. Others have to live this every day of their lives, and they have to figure out how to help their own family members face it as well. This idea of being able to opt out has been really sobering to me, and it makes me realize the only way any of this gets dismantled is for enough people with privilege to choose to opt IN and not retreat from learning, repenting, and changing systems and their status in those systems. This is the concept that has been standing out to me throughout this module.
