I could identify with many of the statements in the video about white people discussing race. I too feel like I should be able to talk about race, but it can often still be uncomfortable. I try to be educated and aware of my bias, but am often afraid of saying the wrong thing. I also recognize that as white person, I have benefited from privileges afforded to be simply because of my skin color. I was surprised to learn that some Latinos and Asian Americans feel the need to downplay or disassociate from the countries and culture of origin. It is sad that Latinos are treated so poorly that they wouldn't want to identify with their home country and culture and that some Asian families would choose not to teach their children a native language for fear of how their children would be treated as less American. There is so much diversity in America that should be acknowledged and celebrated rather than encouraging assimilation out of comfort for white people. There are fundamental differences in how we all experience our day to day. It was very powerful to listen to the experiences of the young black men. We should not have a society where these young men are at risk of losing their life while simply living their life.
