What was your experience like completing the Implicit Association Tests? Did you feel stressed? Anxious? What were your thoughts while reading your results? Were you surprised? Upset? Or, were your results what you expected? This reflection is a significant opportunity to share with other participants.
Here are my IAT results:
Skin-tone IAT
Your responses suggested a strong automatic preference for Light Skinned People over Dark Skinned People.
Raice IAT
Your responses suggested a strong automatic preference for European Americans over African Americans.
Native IAT
slight automatic association for American with Native American and Foreign with White American.
Asian IAT
Your responses suggested little or no automatic association between American and Foreign with Asian American and European American.
After Module 1, I am not surprised by my results for the Skin-tone and Race IAT. How could I not have implicit bias with all that I was unconsciously taught through school, TV shows, media, etc.
It is cringeworthy to be shown that I think this way. But, at this point all I can do is try and be aware of my implicit bias, and do my best to rewire my thoughts.
I found it to be very stressful to take the tests. I am the type of person to overthink, so I often worry that I'm not doing it fast enough. I found the ones with word associations (like bad, good, negative, laughing, etc), to be easier than the ones with pictures (like hollywood, grand canyon, eiffel tower, etc), because it was easier for me to make the immediate association with a word than it is a picture.
Mine overall came back relatively as expected, showing overall little to no preference, but I do believe I came back with a slight automatic preference for European Americans over Black Americans, which I am not proud of, but I understand that I need to acknowledge these things before I work to challenge my own implicit biases.
