At first I felt nervous about taking the IAT. I've taken it before, about eight years ago, when I first started really exploring race and my own whiteness and the bias that was there. At that time, I scored moderately biased toward white people. In taking the IATs today, I was worried that I would have had no change in detected bias. However, each test I took showed no bias detected toward any group, and the indigenous people's IAT actually showed strong bias toward Native American's associated with American! I feel happiness about this, because it's something I've intentionally worked on over the past decade after learning that I had negative implicit bias- reading stories from diverse authors, consuming media (tv, movies, etc) that portrays people's real, lived experiences, and especially the gift of friendships with people of color. Mainly, I feel relieved that people can change- biases can be deconstructed.
