Whenever somebody brings up the idea of White culture, I automatically think of American culture to be honest. My idea of my culture is directly tied to my idea of my national affiliation. When I think about Black culture, I think about what it has done to advance the American culture. So basically until recently, subconsciously when I think about culture, I was using culture as a way to control the minority groups in America. "Well you are from that culture and that has added to White culture in this way." I can't think like that anymore. White culture isn't about anything but oppression and pain. That is the culture that my race belongs to. My culture has been influenced by other races' cultures since we created the concept. White culture needs to die in order for racial lives to actually live and thrive. My thoughts about White privilege have been constantly on my mind for the past month. While it should have started a long time, I am proud that it is on my mind now. Everyday, I sit down and ask myself how I have benefited from my own privilege. I have been able to start having dialogues with collegues, friends, and family about my privilege. I have been able to start figuring out how to effect change with my privilege. I have started to line out questions to future employers about how my white privilege is effecting the hiring of BIPOC. I want to arm my privilege now. That's my next step.
