I was not surprised my test stated I was more inclined to people with dark skin compared to light skin. I am Mexican and I grew up in a small town mixed mainly of white people and Mexicans with a few Asian and American families. I grew up with negative experiences with a lot of the white people in my town and had to deal with racism. This made me angry growing up. When I left my small town for college I was very apprehensive towards white people and went through a phase of really disliking white people and not afraid of hiding it. As I grew up I worked on my anger and became less angry. I also got to know some actually nice white people and who essentially, 'got it'. Now in my professional career I am even more less angry and do not significantly dislike white. I will say I still have some hesitation but I am more open.
As I continue to grow and reflect I also have noticed my own bias and prejudice even around my fellow friends and family of color. I have learned about the impact of racism and microaggressions between other races as well and the impact it has had. I realize to be a better ally it is not just important to stand up and be anti-racist when a white person is being racist or engaging in a microaggression but also when a POC is saying or doing something that is racist.
