I’m sad to think that “freedom” is what can be considered white culture. Freedom should be given to everyone, and I want it to be given to everyone because no one person is less human than the others. It’s upsetting to think that this has never been true. Through the current role that the Black Lives Matter movement has been having on society I have been trying to be more aware of raising black voices, listening more and learning about what else I can do to support black lives. Watching the TedTalk made me realize that there are other marginalized races and people who deserve to be treated with the same amount of respect and time and effort as black lives. Yes, black lives are paving the way for these conversations and their lives matter. I hope that the work that I am doing in this time of unrest and speaking out against police brutality I am also able to use my white privilege to lift up other races of people that need the same amount of attention. I know I carry white privilege, and now that I have been hit in the face with how it effects me every day, I want to use it to better our society and raise up the voices of the people who can’t.
