I have seen this video before but forgot how powerful and moving it is... and heartbreaking, to think about how this is constant reality for so many children across the world, for their entire upbringing rather than just one day. Watching this video again now that I have become a therapist working with adolescents, it reminds me so much of how often I have seen that defeated, paralyzed, ashamed look of a young person who's experienced discrimination. You can see how it has impacted their self-esteem, how much it has shaped their view of themselves. And when factoring in the self-fulfilling prophecy - that people tend to behave or perform how they perceive others are expecting them to - makes me heartbroken to think of how often children of color may bypass opportunities, believing they are unworthy or incapable.
