I have completed implicit bias tests before. I have also assigned them to my students. I think they are a very important tool. I think they are a great way to try to get through to students who may not understand. In healthcare, some who have not studied racial and ethnic disparities may not realize there are known significant differences in care and outcomes for patients who are Black or Brown. They have a tendency to say "I treat everyone the same". I try to find a gentle way to break through to students otherwise they will not listen (in many circumstances) so I try to start with something that feels a little less intrusive to their current mindset (& perhaps I am being too gentle also, this is a possibility too) so that I can break through. I will tell them a story about a patient that reminded me of my mother (and I did not have a positive relationship with my mother) and how I tried hard to not let that impact me and how that could be a bias that I have. I then ask them to also do the implict bias tests and see those ways they may not realize they have biases. It works sometimes, other times they just ignore it and presume they know best. I try...
