I have been through Jane Elliot's workshop several times, including with Jane. What most impresses me is the courage it took her to try the experiment and the fact that she would probably be fired is she replicated the experiment now. What her experiment revealed was the extent to which racism is taught and modeled, and that we all have implicit biases. In the tests I've taken so far, I had a STRONG animus toward Trump, and a slight-moderate preferences to whites and heterosexual, even though my sister is gay and I love both her and her partner. It's challenging to grow up in this culture and avoid implicit bias, no matter how one tries. Being reminded of this was helpful.
Watching the blue eye brown eye video segment makes me wonder about what ages are still open minded enough to see and learn from this type of process. Given that our society starts influencing children about race in infancy, at what age do racist idea become much harder to change? I'm going to watch the full documentary.
It is amazing how quickly friendships are put aside and teasing and bullying replace them just by planting an idea of superiority in the mind of a child. The "better" eye color even admitted at the end that they didn't feel very good about themselves. The kids just wanted to be rid of the stigma of wearing the blue collars.
