Listening to Mercedes Peters was very enlightening. I feel the biggest takeaway I gained from her talk was the fact that I have the privilege to walk away from political issues and blend into the background. I am able to do this because my skin is white and I am viewed as the "default" race in society. This is quite possibly the biggest privilege I can imagine. Society has been built for people like me to live daily life without fear of targeted racism or discrimination. I can avoid the uncomfortable topic of racism because my skin allows me to do so.
