WOW!! That was a powerful TedX Talk and I wonder did I hear her better because as she pointed out - her privilege of looking white? I want to believe that bias doesn't exist within in me as I have spent years studying indigenous history, been privileged to have elders share their wisdom, and participated in indigenous celebrations. The truth be told my bias does exist, so too does my respect for her being forthright and not pulling any punches - says it as it is. Once her talk has been heard the responsibility to learn more and act belongs to the listener. So I wonder, in her class the students of privilege that enrolled, were they aware of their bias? Were they ready to learn about the history? Rationalization is a strategy for many and it was a tough lesson to recognize when that was the strategy of choice. I am getting better at holding my tongue and listening with hearing ears because I am aware I do have privilege.
