My thoughts about white identity, entitlement, and culture are confirmations of what the videos mentioned: that most white people do not think of white people when they think of race, that they do not know what privileges they have, and that the culture of many white people in this country is freedom. I agree that the white people who are protesting the quarantine are entitled and angry that their privilege and freedoms are being rolled back even a little. I've been seeing interesting posts on social media contrasting these protesters to those with signs for Black Lives Matter, and I think seeing those side-by-side says a lot about who are the oppressors and the oppressed.
Right...I have been more aware of sexism (in terms of "men" being the default for "people", and me as a women not included in "people") than I have of my white privilege. I need to pay more attention to the insidious ways I am privileged by my white skin.
When I saw the news of the white men (mostly men) with their weapons at state capitols protesting stay-at-home COVID orders, it was clear to me if a group of Black men did the same thing, they would have been shot dead on the spot. Pretty outrageous...and a very clear demonstration of white privilege.
