I have taken these numerous times, originally I remember having an immediate negative reaction, being defensive, embarrassed, and frustrated that there was probably something wrong with the scoring. It is interesting to take these again now, after various trainings in the past as well as currently, my reaction was more in line with understanding why and how I have these biases, as well as understanding that the impact of these can/will impact how I interact in the world.
I also have taken these tests several times. As a white person, I expect implicit racial bias to present. I don't like that it does, but I do know that defensiveness and guilt will not help me to work on how to examine how these biases present in my interactions. In the past, when I have taken other tests than the 4 associated with this program, I was surprised to find that I also have implicit biases against groups of which I am a member. As a queer person, I was not expecting to have slight automatic preference for straight people, but that gave me even greater insight into how insidious the learning and absorbing of biases is in an racist, sexist, xenophobic, heterosexist, ableist, classist culture.
I believe these tests will cause everyone to take a look in the mirror. The results of the tests show the biases we are unaware of. Self-reflection is paramount to understanding why we may be biased and, ultimately, to change our thinking and behaviors.
