These videos reminded me of a conversation I had in a class in college about hidden identities. I am white and my mother is white euro american, but my father is Lebanese and Swiss. He came to the US as a 5 year old from Lebanon. He is the only blonde hair blue eyed one of his 4 siblings. I know I have a culture unlike a lot of white people and I am proud of this culture. It is interesting to me that people from my father's culture fought to be considered white and it pains me that they had to deny their unique culture to play into the systemically racist system that exists. Colorism is something I have understood for a long time as it plays out in my family with our varying skin tones. It is interesting what people think is okay to say in front of me when they make assumptions about my culture based on my white skin. I especially experienced this as a young adult post 9/11.
