I am white and grew up in a city that would be considered racially diverse. There was a significant population of Black and Brown people. Many were of Cape Verdean and Puerto Rican descent and many were Black. We often talked about race and I have been called "white X" in a derogatory manner and in a fun manner with friends, but I realized pretty early on that calling me white X never carried the same burden. I know it was not entrenched in systemic racism and supremacy (although I could not have articulated in that way at the time). Thank you.
