Unfortunately, I identified all too closely with the white people in the video who discussed their discomfort in talking about race issues. I always hesitate to discuss these issues with people of color because I always feel vastly out of my element and do not want to make it seem like I am an expert or that my opinions are superior in any way. This article by Courtney Martin puts it very well: If you are going to speak out, "give credit to the Black thinkers who are influencing you." The majority of this work has not been done by white people, so we need to amplify voices of color whenever possible and give credit where credit is due.
Talking about race can be uncomfortable especially for white people as we don't truly understand how even the little everyday accommodations made to their behavior and personality are made to keep them safe and out of the eye of law enforcement. What a horrible way to have to live your life--always second-guessing what other people's intentions are towards you simply due to the color of your skin or your ethnic background.
