I've seen this before, but it was good to watch again. I would be SO scared to do this with real kids. It seems like it could be very traumatizing. But this also seems like a brilliant teacher who has a great relationship with her kids, and who had a very intentional plan about bringing them back together for healing.
In the past, I've always been struck by how quickly the kids buy into the discrimination and hatred. But something else jumped out at me today--the impact on academic achievement, and the kids' ability to articulate that they couldn't focus on learning because they were so distracted by their collars. It makes me think of the "Achievement Gap," and wonder how many of our kids can't learn at their best because our schools are not a place of equity and they can't focus on their learning because they are so distracted by the injustices in their day to day schooling. We have work to do.
