As a professor of Dance in Culture, I use Jane Elliot's videos with my students. Even though it brings controversy, it helps students open their eyes to their implicit bias, especially at a university where the majority are white. Micro-aggressions are so ingrained in the way many of us communicate. We need to bring awareness to the way we communicate, we need to have a greater sense of cultural sensitivity toward everyone around us. We need to stop it when we use them and when we see them.
When we are part of the "us," it puts us in a higher bracket leaving behind everyone else "the other."
I feel very fortunate to teach culturally relevant teaching in research and practice courses through movement. The meeting of two cultures through the lens of dance has been a blessing to many past students.
How fascinating. Every area and every field has ways in which anti-racist work can be done. I know that dance is deeply rooted in culture, but I hadn't thought about the aspect of culturally relevant teaching in the field of dance. Thank you for sharing! ~ Brenda
