Wow - just wow - so powerful. I am still absorbing this one. I think I was particularly struck by how the children's phonics performance was affected just by thinking they were superior eye color v. inferior eye color. Also - the change in the children's demeanor was obvious. This was only one adult making the assertion as well - imagine if you are surrounded as a child by multiple like-minded adults and how that can make a lasting imprint on a child's worldview. So much to unpack here...
Yikes that was VERY uncomfortable to watch. Incredible how quickly the children's behavior changed. Their looks on the playground--being included or excluded, their performance in class. WOW. I am chagrined...and also encouraged that they could learn about discrimination in this way. What an interesting teacher for her time. And yes, @Caryn Aulenbach imagining this kind of treatment multiplied by many adults.
