First off I love Jane Elliot and love that she's been teaching such effective anti-racism lessons/ doing anti-racism work for so long. Second, I want to show this video to everyone in my life who I've heard make some kind of subtle racist comment about black student's ability to do well in school. It makes sense that their work would be so impacted by how they're spoken to/about in and outside of school...but that element PLUS the numerous additional systemic barriers they're also facing outside of school? The strength and determination students of color must have to overcome all of the barriers that us white folks put in front of them (verbally, academically, economically, etc.) is truly astounding and something I'll never fully be able to appreciate because of the privilege that I experienced, but nonetheless, humbly admire. I truly hope changes are made as more white folks are made aware of these issues, especially in the school system. All kids deserve to be believed in and supported as they learn, grown, develop a senses of selves and confidence in the gifts they have to offer the world (academically or not academically). We really shouldn't even have to say that, but here we are.
