What are your thoughts about the concept of white culture, identity, and entitlement as they were discussed? What are your thoughts about the concept of white privilege?
I am confused by the discussion that White Race has no perceived culture and yet most of us are tied to our whiteness and that being white seems to be the bar by which everything else is measured. I have to think about that a little more.
I am coming to terms with white privilege. I truly believed that people were more divided according to socio-economics, but I was wrong. I remember struggling to be the first person in my family to attend college, receive a Master's, and then an MBA. I remember moving into our first home when I was in the 6th grade and still being from the wrong side of town and then being bused 45m minutes to my middle school because of the neighborhood I lived in. I also remember listening to people and they made assumptions about who I was, who I was married to, and how I grew up, and none of what I heard aligned with the truth, and no one ever asked to verify if they were correct. Still just by being white, I moved seamlessly through jobs and in society. Until recently, I thought I had earned to be where I am in life and now it appears I just got lucky by being white. I am struggling. What I know is that I need to be part of change. I want to be part of change. I need to figure out how to be part of change. This is a learning process.
