Recently I was touring a youth correctional facility in Ohio-we were conducting research on a project beginning at the facility. As we were touring the facility, we were acutely aware that the facility was an all male facility and that a vast majority of these youth were Black. Youth were given an opportunity to "earn" more activities and upgrade to a better floor through a point system for good behavior. Disproportionately, the youth on the "good floor" were white. These lectures have made me reflect more on the ways we systematically discriminate against youth of color. Additionally, many of these youth found solace in members of their community and family system at the facility. It felt very clear how these youth were systematically being discrimated against at this type of facility.
