As a NY-born and raised Latina, I do not consider myself ignorant to the atrocities committed against BIPOC over the course of history and through the present. My lived experiences have made me keenly aware of the differences in neighborhoods, opportunities, treatment of people. But, Module 1 has given me even more insight into the depths of the violence committed against black and brown bodies. The use of enslaved women for medical experiments, the wholesale theft of indigenous children from their families, the government sanctioned robbery of opportunities, livelihoods, dignities is almost too much to bear. And, a reminder of the enormous privilege of not having to learn of this all first-hand. I am ever more committed to education, to decolonizing my own mind and moving into strategic, mindful, educated action in my community.
