It never ceases to amaze me how whitewashed our history curriculums are. I had no idea that the Carlisle School existed and that it was the origin of residential schools in North America--Carlisle is only 2 hours away from my hometown in Pennsylvania.
I was also appalled and disgusted to learn about the kerosene baths in El Paso and how those practices later inspired the Nazis to implement similar ones in European concentration camps.
So much history of oppression and racial violence is glossed over when we learn about US history, and it is unacceptable. Especially considering the fact that systemic oppression and violence is not just a part of our history, but very much still present and active to this day.
