I have taught kindergarten, 1st grade, 4th grade and now 6th grade. Obviously there are developmental limitations on what we should be teaching children. Subjecting young children to the dark history in the United States would be traumatic. But, we also don't need to glorify the United States so that children grow up believing this country is based on peace and justice for all. Whenever we blindly celebrate Columbus Day and Thanksgiving, and we leave out the full history, we are perpetuating the problem. These videos represent a glimpse into our past, we need anti-racism work to begin with knowledge. Knowledge is information. Knowledge is power. It is shocking how little the average person knows about our history. Mandates need be made in schools if we want to raise a generation of knowledgable Americans.
