A lot of younger white people are just too young to remember many of these things. I was in high school when the town I lived in realized it had laws on the books prohibiting sales to blacks. To their credit, when they realized it was there it was on the next ballot to overturn and the vote wasn't even close. My home town was embarrassed. Now, I'm not going to tell you that they were as happy when blacks moved. A friend, an MD, moved to Arkansas for a job and was confused and disappointed about how few apartments she could find for rent--until one of her fellow doctors told her that people didn't advertise because then they came under fair housing laws. Point is, this is still going on and, like my home town (Birmingham, MI) if you're white you won't see it unless you look for it.
