I knew it existed and I knew in some ways how, but the red-lining was something I didn't know and the video outlined it in a very easy to follow way. Everyone should have to watch that video.
I find myself looking at what is identified in this course, identified as US centric, and reflecting on what it is like here, in Canada. I am unclear about whether red-lining goes on in Canada, but I am sure they have something like it. I know that the RCMP were originally formed to police the indigenous to keep them from interfering with the Hudson's Bay Company and their "rights" to hunt and trade. Canada also disproportionately incarcerates and criminalizes black and indigenous people, especially men. Police are known to profile and stereotype the people they choose to stop and interrogate. Canad is also known for having racist immigration laws, where they target certain areas to hire domestics into almost a kind of indentured servant for a specified period of time before granting them true landed immigrant status. This was done with people from the Caribbean for years and now is done with Philippine people. For many it is the only way for them to escape the poverty of their own countries and begin the long work of repatriating their families in North America.
Equally so, I continue to be aghast about what is considered acceptable by those in power, and keep wondering why this is allowed to continue. Are colonial white people really that complacent?
I agree. I never really understood this concept & the impact it has.
Discussion Decorum: Participants will treat each other with respect. When disagreeing or debating, focus comments on the facts and training content, not personalities. No personal attacks. Purposefully rude or derogatory language will not be tolerated.
