When you think deeply about slavery only being 155 years ago in our country... It allows us to understand that there have been huge disadvantages passed down from generation to generation. The black schools and jobs available to newly freed slaves were the same jobs they were perfoming as slaves. Many could not attend higher educational facilities or even register to vote for years. The fortunes built on the backs of their ancestors still benefit many white families today. Poverty and lack of education is a vicious cycle and only 5-10% of black families have been able to break out of poverty in every generation since the freeing of slaves. Institutional racism still echoes in the lives of these people of color, and the more we know how to identify and rebuke these practices the better off all Americans will be.
