While watching the video about the New Jim Crow Museum, I remembered back to several items that my grandmother had in her home that looked like some of the antiques in the museum. When I was a child, I didn't realize that these were caricatures, but looking back I'm sure that these influenced my subconscious thoughts about black people. I also remember seeing a statue in my neighborhood of a black boy holding a lantern. I didn't know that this was a racist caricature until high school when I casually mentioned it to my mom and she told me this. I'm having a lot of realizations of how much these images have been put into my mind even though I grew up 30 years after Jim Crow laws ended.
