This is such startling information. The more I learn about the United State's history and foundation on racism and white supremacy, the more I realize I don't know. It is alarming that slaves were year decades before the Declaration of Independence and that the number of Black men have grown so high, just to name a couple of things. It is shocking and disgusting. I am alarmed to think of how raising a generation with parents in jail and prison will inform, traumatize, and further oppress future generations of Black people.
I am White and I remember growing up the idea that racism is a thing of the past. We studied the 60's, the Civil Rights era, and Martin Luther King, Jr. on a very surface level. We got into the 70's, and then the history classes kind of fizzled out. It amazes me how much there is to learn of how things have been shifted over the past 40-50 years and even in my lifetime. Racism is not dead. It is very much alive. We can't remain silent.
