Do you think these historical events, rules, and laws still impact our society today?
Definitely. Horrific historical treatment of specific groups can't help but affect modern attitudes and assumptions. In many cases we haven't learned any lessons. What scares me most is the ability of the majority to 'look away' and create narratives to excuse clearly discriminatory practices. I think the world in general is becoming more insular and divisive after a brief period of internalization.
Reflection 1.2
Reflect on the discussion about history, our foundational structures, the "red lining" of families of color out of opportunity for economic advancement, the connection between poverty, educational opportunity, and incarceration. Are you able to see those connections?
Yes. As an international educator working in predominantly non-white countries I am just now examining the role that private school institutions - of which I work and my children have grown up in - perpetuate the idea the idea of 'whiteness' as being right.
